Using the Global Positioning System
A few days ago I had the possibility to see Ulf Fågelhammar´s Open Air exhibition in Skärholmen, Stockholm. Ulf has caught playing children in his photos. In the middle of the housing area there is a screen, divided into three parts containing 28 photos in black and white, showing the children and people of the neighbourhood.

Metrograd is getting closer
When thinking about your pictures, do you see them as something you do to collect impressions from the outer world or the other way around - that your pictures come from inside you and out to other people?
It's mostly the first case. I sometimes see the camera as a little black box where I collect things that affect me somehow. Usually it's not that important to show the picture to others but to save them for myself. I don't think of my works as documentary in the sense of capturing some kind of truth, it's all about personal reflections.
Knowing that you have massive experience in the darkroom, what is your opinion and experience of digital photos and the digital darkroom?
Well, I wouldn't say massive but I've spent more time in the darkroom than in Photoshop. From what I've seen from skilled digital photographers their technique far exceeds what I'm capable of in the darkroom. I use digital cameras at work and in school but still use film for my personal work. It's partly because I prefer the feeling of working with old cameras with big bright viewfinders where I can clearly see the picture before I shoot, partly because I like the curiosity of waiting for the results.
What is you favourite musical band and how do they affect your photographical work?
My favourite band is the Mountain Goats. I love the lyrics and the intensity in his voice and guitar. The lyrics always create pictures inside my head, like watching a whole movie in three minutes and he's singing it like it's his diary even though it's not autobiographical. I'm not sure if they have had, and in that case how, any affect on my photography. I've tried listening to music while I'm out taking pictures but it's doesn't work for me. It distracts my vision. In the darkroom I need music though.
Is your work telling more of an ongoing story or do you concentrate on different projects and themes?
Usually my photography is an ongoing story. When I start a project it's often because I realise when I look at older pictures that I have been shooting thematically without thinking about it. Once I realise this I start to think of how and why I've been doing it and sometimes it evolves into a conscious project. I work with a couple of parallel projects that can be put aside for a while from time to time. Metrograd for instance is only shot during the fall and winter.
What in your life affects you most both as a person and a photographer?
Actually I think it’s words. I love listening to the lyrics of songs and reading poetry and literature.
If you could go anywhere with your camera, were would you go?
Anywhere? Then I'd probably go someplace in history, for instance photographing the making of the rock carvings at Tanum. More realistically I'd say travelling with a car for a long period of time through Europe. But actually it's not that important where I go with my camera. I've taken some of my favourite photos around the block or on my way to work.
Are you excited about the exhibition and will there be snacks? ;)
I'm very excited (and nervous) and there will of course be snacks, both solid and liquid ;-)

Gruppo F exhibition opening tomorrow
Tom and Jeanne celebrating with coffee
The F people often talk about their fabulous guest, but this time let´s focus
on a couple of great photographers being part of Gruppo F. They are
Tom Holmlund from Eskilstuna, Sweden and Jeanne Wells from Portland,
Maine, USA.
Tomorrow we will all go to Eskilstuna and the beautiful Form&Färg gallery
situated just ten minutes walk from the railway station. Have a look at the
map and type Eskilstuna, Bruksgatan 6 and you will be sure to find it.
If you are travelling from Stockholm there are trains departing at 10 55
and 12 55. The trip is just one hour.
This is the second time Tom and Jeanne show their work together. First
time was the "Personal Chemistry"-exhibition in 2005. But this time you
will also have a chance to meet Jeanne Wells in person. Don´t miss that
opportunity!
I am really looking forward to this exhibition and I have a feeling that
the two have prepared some outstanding work for us to explore.

invitation to my show: the pleasant streets
It will open Saturday, the 6th January at 7 p.m. in Migawka Café (ul. Nowogrodzka 22, Warsaw, Poland). The exhibition shall last until 25th January. In the opening night only there would be presented 3 slideshows with music, which possibly fill up the picture of the Italian and Polish streets.
Curator: Malwina de Bradé

The exhibited pictures are made in the crossprocessing technique. The contrast and the color which appear, make a new sense and dimension of the pictures. The daily look of the streets changes, they becomes more pleasant and attractive. The Italian and German streets are absolutely opposite. The ones are wide and clean, people are rushing to their work. The other are much older, trim differently and the daily life slows down. The streets of Poland are somewhere in the middle of the Italian and German type. And the color makes them all unreal.

Meeting Marcin
-by Ulla Larsson
This spring Markus Andersson delightfully told me that we were to invite a Polish photographer as exhibitor this autumn. It felt exciting, and now the autumn is here! Marcin Gorski, the photographer, good friend of Markus and a member of Gruppo F, opened his exhibition People I met during the Polish week here in Uppsala.
The first picture is also Marcin’s own choice for exhibition poster. As one chair is free we feel specially invited to the exhibition. One man, perhaps a waitor, is sitting down in a café in Warsaw. Perhaps he is planning today’s work. A beautiful sunlit wall, with interesting shades and nice lines. The picture has a very classic and
timeless feeling to it, an impression also given by the man’s clothes. The café chair with an elegant back, perhaps in the jugend style, as a piece of jewellery. The pattern of the chair’s seat gives a beautiful shade.Sorrento, Italy
Here I met an old man with a white cap. The man has a characteristic profile, emitting strength. He holds his hands together. I keep looking at his old hands. It gives me the special feeling, which the French literary critic and philosopher Barthes(1) named “punctum”. I’m fascinated and my imagination tells me that this old man has a long and exciting life story to tell us. The picture seems to be filled with wisdom.Henryk & Andżelika.
My eye is caught by a very light and positive picture. An old man with tattooes holds a girl with a scarf nicely arranged up in his arms. I’m told that he is usually watching over the small children in the neighbourhood. I see the child’s joy of life and the man’s experience and ability of taking good care.Man & Plane.
An elegant picture, fine lines and smooth surfaces. Contrasting in an exciting way with the man’s creased clothes. Very interesting composition.Silesian Songs, old town Gliwice.
Three boys, about twelve, are looking up, meeting the eye of the photographer. The interesting thing here is that I find three completely different facial expressions. One boy seems curious, the other just happy and the third has a tougher, somewhat questioning expression on his face. Maybe totally different personalities?
The exhibition of Marcin is interesting, beautiful and conveys a warm feeling. I have found many favourites among the photographs and here I only share a small part of the total exhibition.Thank you Marcin for letting us meet the people you have met! Welcome back to us and to our photo gallery. Next stop Warsaw for me.
Warm greetings from Ulla – exhibition group, Uppsala Fotografiska Sällskap UFS
