Docu 09: American Consumerism

As Americans we are told from the very beginning that we should always be purchasing products. Generations are raised on the principle that what you own determines who you are. People are constantly shopping to fill this need for merchandise in a materialistic society. Big box corporations realize this so they house massive amounts of goods for the consumer to purchase. Stores sell items from soda to shotguns, basically anything a consumer might be tempted to buy, and most of these products are not a necessity.
American Consumerism shows the locations that influence American shoppers to purchase vast amount of products. These companies know what methods to use that will influence a person’s decision to buy their products. These methods include specific height placement of goods on shelves. Companies place the products they want people to buy at eye level so they can be seen easier. They also know the products use eye-catching labels that grab the shopper’s attention. The heavy repetition of products is also used through out the store. Shelves are constantly stocked and faced with goods that make the consumer feel that there are unlimited amounts of products to purchase. Companies also barrage the consumer with the vast size of the store and the specific arrangement of store isles. Products people purchase the most, like milk, eggs and bread are usually placed in the rear of the store. This forces shoppers to walk through the entire store and be prone to the company’s persuasion to buy their products.
With my photography I hope to pull people away from the company’s persuasive grip. I want them to realize the kinds of places they spend so much money and time in. Maybe then will people start to change their buying habits and give more thought to where they go shopping.

Reminiscences of the silent landscape
The seventh day. I really do believe that we will never get out of here. This journey just keeps getting longer and longer. City, trees, fields, water, highway; city, diner, trees, fields; highway. We left something behind us. Feeling my sister’s hand in mine. Another highway exit. Another town. Travelling leaves us behind. Falling asleep.
In Märsta on the 11th January 2001 OL intentionally deprived his ex-wife, FB, the mother of his daughter, of her life by administering to her twenty-four knife wounds and cuts to the trunk, neck and head with injuries to the ribs, heart, left lung, liver, inferior vena cava and windpipe as well as several cuts to the left arm, hands and the left leg. Death occurred from the wounds.
The fourth day. The mirror of water is still, gleaming. Car parked. Pausing gives a feeling of liberty. The legs creak lightly, but soon enough exploratory joy takes hold. I investigate the lake, the beach, the sky. All is deserted. Father points to a house at the far end of the water. I do not get a chance to see it before we have to drive off again. But I hear how it creaks in the distance.

The second day. People throng past. Journeys, red lights, faces. Unknown. Once again I reach for the windscreen. Looking. Out. Feeling my sister’s hand in mine, untouched. The red lights are the best. The waiting. The memories. Pictures with a semblance of yesterday. Squeezing the hand. It is still there. The warmth, the memory of yesterday. Now we are moving again.
In Bäckhammar on
At their common work place in Hovmantorp on the 5th of July 2001 HA deprived his wife GA of her life by forcefully administering two knife wounds, one above the left breast injuring the heart, lungs, aorta and inferior vena cava, and the other to the left side of the back injuring the left lung. GA died immediately from injuries caused by the two strokes.
The fifth day. Door closing behind me. Engine rustling to life. Radio on, mostly hissing. White noise. Let’s go, father said. The others were eager. Motion. I felt it through my legs, up to my belly. How was I to know that this was only the beginning.
In an apartment in Göteborg on the morning of the 31st of December 2001 DK deprived his wife SK of her life by administering several cuts with a kitchen knife to the face, the throat with injuries to the upper left aorta, the front of the trunk with injuries to heart and lungs, and the arms and legs. The injuries to the internal organs of the thorax and the upper left aorta lead to SK’s death from loss of blood.

invited guest: Piotr Kosiba travelling thru life
Photography – in the trip thru the life.
Everybody is in constant, unique travel thru the life. The trip brings reminiscences which are then recorded in memory, words or images.
In my trip tries to discover mystery of simple places, moments and people. Seeking the theme of pictures I do not travel to the end of the world but finds it in closest neighborhood. My photostories are then showing the surrounding me world reflecting in my inner world.
Bridges, the project presented at the F Blog is meant as a story about the obstacles stopping us during our travel thru life. What we have to do is to find a proper way to fight it up. Bridges are synonyms of different ways – different solutions…What to choose, sometimes we can manage easily, sometimes it is more complex?

It’s our choice – always.
