lost and found (4)/this is my job

negatives found in liquidated darkroom in my job. Those pictures made by uknown author with old type of pentacon six are documenting perhaps two series of researches, one in-situ, one in our lab. In my opinion pictures were made around 30 years ago.

I will once more ask you the same question: just documentary or already art?

Intersting question: "just documentary or already art?" Does all documentary photography turn into art, if you just give it time? Is that what you are saying?

If so, I would beg to differ. Time, on itself, does nothing to a body of photographic work. Time does, however, change our way of interpretation. I fail to see how our interpretation would necessarily move from documentary to art (given time).

To qualify something as art is, to me, a deliberate act (of transformation). Anything can be art, given this act - at least to some people.

Whether documentary turns into art is thus a question of acting, of calling names, so to speak, not a question of time.

Arnold Odermatt's documentary photos from his long serivice as a policeman are now being issued and treated like they were art. Thus, they become art - at least to some.

I like to see the beauty of both art and documentary - at the same time, if necessary.

It all boils down to quality. With it, you have good stuff. Without it, you really don't have much at all - documentary or art.

my question was bit provocative, of course.

30 years ago when somebody made this picture, thought for sure just about documenting well thecnical research. We have hundreds of such a pictures. Nowodays we make them also. What counts is - how to illustrate well the process, stands, results. Nobody thinks of artistic aspects. So there is no magic moment of artistic creation.

However I know people who hang those pictures on their walls. BW, square frame, metrogtrad mood (sorry Markus, finally original by the motives - just asking to show them.

So, in this case this is a question of the time and consciousness, if anybody would like to call it piece of art.

I don't make any suggestions in my question (if any - just that the things are not black and whites), I'd like to know what you think of that issue.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts with me.

very well composed. there is a sense of photography.
but i can't see from this series any 'conceptual' project and art-project. this is just a good photography imho.

the matter of art, i believe, comes from the author. what he or she would like to say. time is useless here to claim it. time can't make it.
