Some people, like Van Gogh, felt that different colors had different meanings, and possessed some sort of spiritual value, symbolized the essence of being, carried messages..

I don´t know about that "essence" stuff. But colors surely affects me, and also carries meaning, in some sense, like muscial chords do.

Intresting thoughts Jan, I do think much like van Gogh in that sense, spirit in colors. Symbolism of colors.

I often prefer black and white photography for just that reason, it is in some way easier to express feelings and moods when one limits oneself to B&W, It is like color is 'to much to handle', specially in photography where colors often seems to disguise the photgraphers thougts behind the motif itself. It is somewhat different in paintings where the painter has a greater freedom in expression from the beginning.

Well, I don't know if that made that much sense really. It is a halffinished thought i'm afraid...

I think I agree with you Chris.

I often feel that the main mood or meaning, get distracted by colors, or that colors also tend to banalize a motif, the magic disappears so to speak.

But colors are of course also a great seducer, everything looks good with some paint on it! Therefore I think there´s a greater challenge to take photos in color, than in B&W. But, at the same time, B&W is even a greater seducer, you can get away with everything with that. So..
