La settimana italiana / Italian week

You know all roads lead to Rome? Remember the Roman Holiday? Or are you a fan of The blow up by Michelangelo Antonioni?
Have you heard a story of the italian photographer Tina Modotti, an actress and a poet, Edward Weston’s lover, figure in Diego Ribera’s murals…? Have you seen any pictures or heard a story by Piergiorgio Branzi – photojournalist of Europe from 50’s? Have you seen one of the 150 books with pictures by Gianni Berengo Giardin? Have you noticed the great documentary and architecture pictures by Gabriele Basilico? Or have you ever solve Ugo Mulas’ conceptual games on photography?

If no… then you need to browse on gurgle, cause we won’t talk about the legends.

invited photographer: Adou

A few weeks ago I discovered Three Shadows Photography Art Centre, the first art centre for contemporary photography in China. It's situated in Beijing and founded by the Chinese photographer Rongrong and the Japanese photographer Ms. inri. I can strongly recommend their homepage, where one can, among other things, get an overview over their artists and exibitions.

With the aid of Three Shadows Photography Art Centre I am now very happy to have the possibility to present Adou, a very interesting photographer.

"Adou’s photographs of the Yi ethnic minority go beyond documenting the realities of life on Sichuan’s Da Liang Mountain. The landscapes and portraits in the series “Samalada” are more like self-portraits, reflections of the self and meditations on life and death, past and present. Adou’s use of expired rolls of film creates mottled textures and anomalies, which evoke a melancholic nostalgia for the past. These works do not speak for, or explain the situation of the people depicted, but rather become part of the artist’s visual language for self-expression.

Adou was born in Mianyang, Sichuan Province and graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Sichuan Aba Normal College. He has worked as a Design and Creative Director in advertising, and currently lives and works in Chengdu, Sichuan Province." (Three Shadows Centre)

Invited Guest: Thomas Wågström

Wågströms photographs are a personal reflection on conditions such as vulnerability, obsession and fear and have a narrative character, combining an artistic expression with a documentary story. His photographic projects have been exhibited in various forms such as books, exhibitions and stills for Swedish television. Who are you, who am I? Shall I take care of my brother? Those are the words of the Swedish poet Marie Lundquist, quoted from Wågströms book ”The Inner Side of Earnest” (1994). For two years he followed a unit from the Swedish Special Forces during their education and was amazed by the almost ritual form of gravity in which they tackled their difficult trials.

In the book ”Boxers” (2000), Wågström continued to investigate the question of male identity. His photographs of boxers describe the conditions of contemplation and an inner struggle, rather than the real fight that takes place in the boxing ring. He is interested in the introspective expression, a sort of state of emergency of the soul, which he considers as the essence of boxing.

His latest book published in 2006 is titled ”The Zero Moment”. There is by way of explanation at the end of the book a paragraph quoted from the book by Italo Calvino ”If on a winter´s night”. The first line reads, ”I would like to erase the consequences of certain events and restore an initial condition.” This sets the mood for the images which have a dream like sequence, a borderland between wake and sleep where different kinds of fears and mental obsessions become visible.
