"Everybody who's alive rushes to the cementaries today" have said one of the journalists the 1st of November few years ago. It is true, no matter how abstract it sounds. This social ritual changes a bit every year...

Face to Face on Election Eve

I went to one of the large Obama rallies in the waning days of the election. It was an incredible gathering of diversity, like a peace rally without pot. A few things were evident. Obama's is a youth movement. For them, he has the air of a movie star or musician. He speaks to them of justice and power. The crowd consisted of approximately equal proportions of white and non-white, male and female. It was overwhelmingly working class. And it was overwhelmingly anti-Bush.

I could not find a McCain rally to attend, but I managed to find a Sarah Palin event. It was much different. It was overwhelmingly white, and people stood in a long line to enter the building in which the rally was held. It was a bit like waiting for a ride at Disneyworld.

Ciganos

I met this family in the last summer, gypsy mercado in Fundao (Pt). The man, when he saw me with big MF camera called me to come. He said: please, make us a picture. We are last Gypsies living due to old rules. My wife has to dress the black clothes in this heat. It is a hard life and world does not know about it and about us. We will stay on those pictures for years and people watching us will think of us, our fate and this what has passed away.

Then he took his comb, brushed his beard and said - now.
He asked me to make the portraits of his wife and daughter. His wife was happy that the world will see her black clothes and some unknown people far away may think of her, even when she will be gone.
I stood speachless...making just 3 pictures instead of several films...

my favourite stadium of the world. it's not big, it's not 'national' nor 'olimpic' one. it's just a small stadium in the center of warsaw, pride of the governors under comunist era, build from the ruins of the old town destroyed during the 2nd WW. now being demolished to build on it a brand new one...

Sustainability Experiment - DOCU 08

In the 70's an idealistic couple, their retired parents and their two small children came to the Sequatchie Valley area in Tennessee and formed a 300-acre homestead. Moonshadows has evolved into a model for sustainable living and an educational organization called Sequatchie Valley Institute (www.svionline.org).

This is Carol Kimmons, one of the founders, conducting a tour about edible wild plants.

Recently Moonshadows offered the use of some of their land to a group of young couples who felt inspired to create an eco-village called Satya Village (named after the Hindu word for Truth). This band of modern-day pioneers live in army tents, tipis and campers. They raise organic vegetables, chickens and goats. They have added outhouses and showers (cold water only) and cook their food on woodstoves and propane campstoves. It is a hard and difficult life, but one they feel committed to pursue.
