The act of love

The fiddler

Cry me a river

First known to me as Umma Liten, I immediately liked the photographic expression of her. Line Nääs, as her real name is, has a special feeling to her photos. She is a favourite photographer of mine. I'm happy to present her here at the F blogg. Take a look at her further photos here or at her homepage.

PS. You might want to see her exhibition IRL in Grands matsalar 28-29 oktober in Karlstad. Invited by Christian Wettergren.

Super 8 mm: "The rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated"

I was watching the telly the other night and was informed that Super 8 mm film is all gone in Europe. Really? When I checked this out a bit more, it all came down that Kodachrome is not processed anymore in Switzerland. From now on you need to send the Kodachrome film to the US.
So the Super-8 is not dead after all: To be more precise: The amateur film has gone professional. The special look is highly sought by commercial makers but also by directors that strive to evoke a period or to give a different look to scenes.
I was brought up with 8 mm films and when I heard the sound of the projector, I knew there was some quality time ahead, three minutes
of fun (that's one cartridge of film). That was before the two-hour video films replaced the well directed three-minute stories. Today, I use a digital video camera to cover some of the family events. Despite the digital convenience, I bring out the Super 8 camera and capture some events once in a while. Because that special atmosphere it captures is something I want to pass on to the next generation in my family. Kodachrome may be gone but the Big Yellow has more on the shelf.

Taking care of the plants

photo: Hans Åström / abeku

Talking about family photography: I was lucky having an uncle who was fond of taking pictures. Nothing fancy about his equipment, a Zeiss Contina, a light bulb flash and a Kodak Carousel slide projector, simple and reliable gear. I'm very fond of the casual situations he captured once in a while among all the other traditional birthday and christmas photos. Here's my grandfather taking care of the plants. A photo from the late 50's.

Too emotional?

But isn't the problem to separate your own emotions from the subject? Is this a good photo, I haven't got a clue. It means a lot to me personally, but is this just in my own perspective?

How to know whether 'you succeed in creating a photo that transcends the circumstances of its origin' is difficult when the photo touches your self. On the other hand, if the photo doesn't mean anything to you, how can it be a good photo then?

Gunnar Smoliansky - Centralen vårvintern 1956

Photo: Gunnar Smoliansky (published here at the F-blog with his kind permission).

This Saturday (Oct. 7), 11 o'clock at Prins Eugens Waldemar's Udde, Stockholm, an exhibition opens up by Gunnar Smoliansky and his photographs from the late winter in 1956. Photographs showing the life at a railway station fifty years ago.
You'll be able to see this exhibition until January 7, 2007. The address is:
Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde
Prins Eugens väg 6
Open: Tue–Sun 11–17, Thur 11–20.
Phone: 08-545 837 00

(Hans Henrik Brummer, ur katalogen Centralen vårvintern 1956.)

Vernissage: 7 oktober 2006 kl. 11–17.
Tel: 08-545 837 00
Invited by Anders Blomqvist.

Korn

Shot outside Korn on the 4th of march (my 30th birthday). Lots of people looking at our photos and I needed to get a little air. I get rather nervous when I see strangers looking at, and talking about, my pictures so I usually need to get away for awhile to calm down.

But a great day it was.
