invited Guest: Tomas Holmqvist

Many years ago I discovered Tomas Homqvist’s series of photographs, made with a halfframe camera, at Swedish photo community. Since then the series have continued to fascinate me. Now it is a honour to have the possibility to present some of his photographs on the F blog.

Images of real life situations have within them the elements
of
physics, math, art, and the laws of light and time all in
one moment,
all in one frame.

It's no surprise that a black and white photograph
will contain elements that will make for a contemplative
composition
and seemingly intentional design -
not as random as some may believe.

Time and time again I see these elements, objects,
people "fall together"
within the frame of an image
as though one had planned it's layout

(or design) very carefully.

Yet no more than a call to our mind's eye was
needed to find and respond to a moment in time,
the elements there-in,
and to focus a lens and
click a shutter.

We are (the structure and the elements) and therefore
we see and respond to them .. even if only

by our intuition.

The Fly Hears Beyond Your Thoughts

The Fly - Às vezes só queria ser 1 mosquinha - III

The Fly - Às vezes só queria ser 1 mosquinha - IV

Photos: Maria Flores, Lisboa, Portugal.
I saw her photos on a photosite and were catched by the creativity
and the surreal world she has created. Those photos make my
imagination run. Make me associate to other photos and also movies

i have seen. The use of the television screen gives many interesting
interpretations....i say no more...what do you think by your self..? Could be
interesting to read them in a comment for example.

See more of Maria Flores work here

and here

Maria says: "Do not everyone already want to fly? To be able to hear the conversation they are whispering? In Portugal we have an expression "Só queria ser uma mosquinha" (Just want to be a fly to hear what they are saying). In this series I did a joke with that. It was very amusing. Most of the times i photographs with the help of my love Fernando Figueiredo who is also a photographer. We help each other, sometimes I resort to assemblies, for the resorce lack....we are the models...but that also make the act of photographing very amusing. In this series I worked alone. I did the props, I like doing the pieces for the photographies. The wings are wire, the eyes are simple tools from the kitchen and the tv is one of so many pieces that we find in the surroundings. In the streets we have been finding very interesting objects. In the photography "In the the best soup the fly falls" I looked also for a Portuguese sentence, a proverb. I like a spirit of a mood in the photos, or a certain lyricism..../"

Invited guest: Ewa Stackelberg (2)

This is the second part presenting pictures by Ewa Stackelberg.
The selection is from a suite of 42 pictures exhibited at Fotografins
hus, Stockholm in April 2006. The suite is based on an old photograph
showing her parents. She has created original photograms without
using camera or film. I am struck by the beauty of these images.
Please also have a look at the posting of December 22 with Ewas
photograms.

There may be a sheet that shields us like a skin.
A thin sheet around our love.
That bears the newborn.
Cools the one that sweats.
Surrounds the lovers.
The ones who loved long ago,
in love scenes that precede us.
And then the sheet around the young.
I want to wrap up their openness.
Raise a weave against the red strobe.
There may be a sheet for the power and fragility of the body.
That surrounds and lets fall.
A cloth to give to the warm darkness.

invited guest: Łukasz Kuś (carp story)

I was thinking of inviting Łukasz for some time with other - very important documentary work he makes. I believe I will have a chance to present you in the future.
Yesterday Łukasz revealed a negative with pictures corresponding with December 24th.
For over 20 millions of Polish people (or more) there are no Xmas without the CARP. The second 20 millions cannot imagine Xmas without herring. Now you have a chance to see still hot pictures with still alive carps. I am posting this material just after terminating the meal (of 12 dishes) where carp was the king of the table :)
Merry Xmas to everybody. Thank you Łukasz.

During my visits in Spain I never had any desire to go to Barcelona,
maybe because I was happy when I was either in Madrid or in
San Sebastian. So It took me about 15 years to get to Barcelona,
and when i finally went there it was mainly because I felt I needed
to get away from Madrid for a while.

Happy Christmas... well ... Make It Happy!

Well, today is the day. Let's relax and search for some Christmas Spirit. :)
I need to talk about something else also, something else than Christmas. I think it is so interesting that we have entered a new era. We have entered the era of peer production. This blog, the music scene, and so on, they are all evidence of this - although without the economic gains.
So, take a look at this swedish hip hop collective, Frispel. Quite good band, made me happy to listen to.

feliz natal, boas festas

lost and found

Two days ago friend of mine called me telling that in my faculty it was find a hidden under the stairs of major aula old photographic lab. Several of other labs were already liquidated few years ago, before I started to work. I was told that all of photographic gear (LF and MF cameras, enlargers for big prints and so on) where devastated by the liquidation commission due to some barbarian rules, not allowing to sell or give to anybody liquidated equipment.
Commission is obliged to destroy the equipment before it will be thrown away.

This time my friend and me run to rescue what possible.
The commission was fast and scruples. They already destroyed the gear (8 and 16mm movie cameras and projector) and packed almost all of the negatives, glass plates and diapositives into rubbish bags. We digged there and what seemed to be interesting we simply stolen (by the definition of those surreal regulations). Majority of the material it was simply didactic support, bases of lectures or lectures itself. Plenty of them were records of researches made in situ and in labs.
But there were pearls – documentary of private life of my university stuff from 1945 till 1980s. I will try to show you what we found.

Thanx for Zygmunt Bartoszek who alerted and was my partner in this crime.

The choice of first post was random – a picture from series of MF negatives dated 1980, unknown author.

Alone Together

And different in so many ways

Invited guest: Ewa Stackelberg

I want you to meet Ewa Stackelberg and get to know her
vision and photography. My first meeting with her was when
the book "Tale for the living" Berättelser för levande was
handed over to me by Peter Ragnarsson (I will tell you more
about that later)

I was spellbound by the story and the photograms that Ewa
had created.

It´s my intention to present parts of Ewa´s work during a
period of a couple of weeks, beginning with five photograms
from her exhibition in April this year at Fotografins hus.

She called the exhibition "Surrender" and the three series
of pictures were presented in different rooms. I begin with
showing five pictures from the series called "The Woman"

Photograms are pictures made without a camera. Read more
about it here.
