IC Gliwice-Warsaw 17.10

Train trips became part of my life. Intensive trips give a chance to read, observe people and think some things over.

Few days ago, before leaving to the train station I received a letter with something expected but still surprising – brand new Pozytyw. Cult magazine about photography that died few years ago, now raised up again, by the team of friends from Gliwice. It has changed from photo magazine into “think it over” magazine – photography gives and important support to the words spelled by philosophers, writers, sociologists or maybe the opposite. The 00, free, test number of Pozytyw treats of Identity.
It was the fastest trip from Gliwice to Warsaw I ever made, still filled with reading, observing people and thinking the things over – this time with use of new tool making the brain working. I press my fingers for creators of new Pozytyw, I hope they will continue this difficult way, standing attacks and temptations of commercialized world.

One more word: you will find in this magazine material devoted to Sydney police mug shots – F blog also wrote about this excellent collection in December 07.

Close to the sky
To the architect the roof is a compact structure of armed concrete
. To the rest of the people it is much more: it could well be a stage where the most intimate of the people dries by the four winds; it could perhaps be an extension of their homes where they store nostalgic junk of their passed. To reach the roof is like being closer to the sky, master the city with your eyes and feel unique.

It was not for granted that the photographer Edward Weston undressed his partner Tina Modotti and immortalized her on the roof of the building situated in the streets Abraham Gonzales and Atenas in the historic centre of Mexico City in the 1920s. The master Alvarez Bravo created his famous work “La Buena fama durmiendo” on top of the San Carlos Academy

It’s a perfect place to conquer love and a place that has given rise to a popular sentence: “Did you hear someone on the roof?”

This work explores a territory that to many of us inhabit a place in our childhood memories. Who will not remember the roof as a place to play hide and seek or to point out where to find the first kiss? However, today there are people who expose their art to the harsh critic of the by passers. Or use this place for their beloved mascots or homing of pigeons. On the roof, you finally share a joke, a cigarette and your dreams.

A quick note & link to let all my F Blog friends know about my latest project, Daily Prints. After many years of a very public life running a bookstore, I'm retiring to the world of shooting and printing for as long as I can.

I hope you'll all take a look, pass the link around, enjoy --

Invited guest: Krister Kleréus

I mostly find my motifs in the streets of the city. It´s my way of depicting people and events in the urban environment where many of us spend most of their time. You will find more photos here

I asked Krister to write something about his work. As you notice he is a modest man. But his pictures speak loud and clear. Warm, humorous and observant. Many thanks for being here Krister./Ulf

Trycheln in Meiringen

The origins of the “Trychelns” lies in the pre-Christian time, as the inhabitants of the mountain valley (Haslital, Berner Oberland) at the longest nights of the year tried, to keep away the bad spirit from their villages.

Everyone swings its small or big cow bells in the same rhythm. Drummers indicate the tact. So it goes loudly, for hours, day after day, night after night. The faces are often masked and the faces and costumes are very fear-exciting. The Trychlen begins on the 26 December and lasts up to the last work day in the year, the Ubersitz. The night of the Ubersitz is the crowning conclusion of the Trychelns.

It´s a beautiful project that Magasin3 has created, exhibiting Julia Margaret Cameron (1815–1879) and Miroslav Tichy (b. 1926). Thanks Jeanne for reminding us what´s going on in our city! The curator Tessa Praun is pleased about this opportunity and says: “It is fantastic to be able to show Tichy´s works that have been tucked away from a public until only a few years ago, and see them together with some of Cameron’s most distinguished and intriguing
portraits”.

Working independent of his contemporaries (what a brave man!) from the 1960’s up to the 90’s, Miroslav Tichy from Czech Republic created an idiosyncratic style, fascinating in its imperfection and reminiscent of photography’s early experimental years.

It´s a must see. The exhibition opened on 26 January at Magasin3 Stockholm Konsthall and will be on until 23 March.
