Taking care of the plants
photo: Hans Åström / abekuTalking about family photography: I was lucky having an uncle who was fond of taking pictures. Nothing fancy about his equipment, a Zeiss Contina, a light bulb flash and a Kodak Carousel slide projector, simple and reliable gear. I'm very fond of the casual situations he captured once in a while among all the other traditional birthday and christmas photos. Here's my grandfather taking care of the plants. A photo from the late 50's.
Too emotional?
But isn't the problem to separate your own emotions from the subject? Is this a good photo, I haven't got a clue. It means a lot to me personally, but is this just in my own perspective?
How to know whether 'you succeed in creating a photo that transcends the circumstances of its origin' is difficult when the photo touches your self. On the other hand, if the photo doesn't mean anything to you, how can it be a good photo then?

Gunnar Smoliansky - Centralen vårvintern 1956

This Saturday (Oct. 7), 11 o'clock at Prins Eugens Waldemar's Udde, Stockholm, an exhibition opens up by Gunnar Smoliansky and his photographs from the late winter in 1956. Photographs showing the life at a railway station fifty years ago.
You'll be able to see this exhibition until January 7, 2007. The address is:

”Gunnar Smolianskys bilder från Centralen bevarar kontakten med en tid när ordet station hade en starkare laddning än nu. Han hade nyligen kommit hem från Brasilien där han hade varit assistent till fotografen Leon Liebermann. Vårvintern 1956 infann han sig på Stockholms Central med sin Rolleiflex, men utan stativ. Det räckte med att stå rakt uppochned, att måtta på fri hand, att undvika konstiga vinklar. Ett knäpp var allt som behövdes. Tittskåpet befann sig på den ödmjuka höjden, barnets ögonhöjd. Kameran kan annars vara ett fruktansvärt vapen – som ett kikarsikte på ett gevär. Men här fanns en seendets omsorg.” (Hans Henrik Brummer, ur katalogen Centralen vårvintern 1956.)

Korn
Shot outside Korn on the 4th of march (my 30th birthday). Lots of people looking at our photos and I needed to get a little air. I get rather nervous when I see strangers looking at, and talking about, my pictures so I usually need to get away for awhile to calm down.
But a great day it was.

Berenika (invited by abeku)
selfportrait The quality of Berenikas artwork strucked me instantly when I discovered her huge production of artwork at altphotos.com. Each and everyone of the pictures deserves the viewer's attention.

To pick a few examples from her portfolio is a challenge. Overall there's a subtle evolution and various themes are seen. To me, there's a surrealistic landscape in pleasant shades of grey, and just like a Tarkovski movie there are scenes of colour that add to the context.

The contemplative mood and silence strikes me when I walk around in her world. There's a strong feeling of being in a observer, watching things on few feet distance. I feel comfortable walking around in her world of mystery.
